  • Cool Off on a Hot Battleship: The Battleship Iowa in Long Beach

    Alyssa Ganezer|Jul 14, 2016

Battleships, once thought to be the ultimate weapon, are now a relic of the past. For a chance to visit this past - and enjoy 360-degree breeze-swept views of Los Angeles Harbor, the USS Iowa at Berth 87, is a great place to go. A self-guided tour takes one in and out of sailors' quarters, mess halls and up and down ladders leading to almost all levels of the ship's significant superstructure and winding around the impressive armaments. It's easy to get distracted by views of yachts sailing in a...

  • Pet Ban Finalized

    Alyssa Ganezer|Mar 23, 2015

On Tuesday, the Santa Monica City Council unanimously approved a ban on anyone bringing any reptile, bird, or non-human primate into any city park. Though the Council alleged this ordinance was directed toward the handful of opportunists on the Pier who offer tourists a photo with their snakes and birds, the new law will affect every owner of a reptile or bird in the city of Santa Monica - probably several thousand citizens. It will also prevent veterinarians at the VCA facility near Douglas...

Alyssa Ganezer, with Sabine Ganezer and David Ganezer|Sep 1, 2014

Four hundred dollars. That's how much money a visitor from Canada and her mother had lost in a few days in Las Vegas. • 4 Councilmembers NOT to Vote for Next Election

    Alyssa Ganezer|Feb 3, 2014

On Tuesday, as predicted, the Santa Monica City Council voted, 4-3, to approve a Developer's Agreement allowing the Hines development company to build a 767,000 square foot mixed commercial/residential project. The "Bergamot Transit Village" project requires Council approval because it outstrips current zoning limits for the site, the one-time Papermate factory at 26th and Olympic. The Council vote was delayed a week past its original date so the Council members could make a show of listening...

  • French Bulldog with a Time Bomb

    Alyssa Ganezer|Dec 2, 2013

These diminutive dogs have the face of a mischievous alien bat from the planet Cute Overload. They're popular and they're adorable. They're also expensive. A purebred French bulldog from a reputable breeder will cost $2,000 and up. But a "Frenchie" born with a health defect is nothing but a liability to a breeder. Not only is the dog impossible to sell, but also the defect reflects poorly on the breeder's reputation. Such dogs are sent to shelters or even euthanized. Unless the breeder happens...
