47 Million Pounds of CRF Food Products Recalled

Update 5/14: Trader Joe's spokeswoman Alison Mochizuki has contacted SMObserved.com, to say that this is a vegetable recall from CRF company. CRF Frozen Foods, Inc is a supplier to many grocery companies, among them Trader Joe's, she says. "The total number of our products affected by the USDA CRF/ajinomoto recall are 2. Out of more than 400 CRF frozen products recalled across numerous retailers in North America, Trader Joe's has 9 under our private label (this factors the 2 referenced above)," says Mochizuki. "All of the items that are part of the recall were pulled from store shelves," Mochizuki says.

The US Dept. of Agriculture has greatly expanded the recall of meat and poultry in California and other Western States. This is now the largest food recall in history.

The recall now includes 47,112,256 pounds of not-ready-to-eat meat and poultry products that may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes. Recalled products have been stocked at Costco, Trader Joe's and other stores, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) says.

This action is being taken in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration because the recalled products contain vegetables that are part of the recent CRF Frozen Foods recall, the FDA says, noting that 8 products sold in California have been included.

In this latest recall, the heat-treated, not-fully-cooked, not-shelf-stable meat and poultry items were produced by Ajinomoto Windsor, Inc. over the last two years. Frozen products may be sold for that long, ordinarily.

Other than Trader Joe's, the company said it didn't have a list of stores that sell the product, but Fortune magazine report said Costco was one of the stores.

The products subject to recall have the establishment number "EST. 21225," "EST. 9281," "EST. 1623A" or "EST. 18356" inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped nationwide and to Canada and Mexico.

The problem was discovered when Ajinomoto Windsor, Inc. was notified by CRF Frozen Foods that its frozen vegetables used in Ajinomoto Windsor, Inc. products were involved in a recall. CRF Frozen Foods of Pasco, Washington voluntarily recalled frozen fruit and vegetable items due to an illness outbreak of listeriosis, according to the FDA. There have been no confirmed reports of illness or adverse reactions due to consumption of Ajinomoto Windsor, Inc.'s products.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less commonly, persons outside these risk groups are affected.

Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. An invasive infection spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract.

In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems.

Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics. Persons in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the health care provider about eating the contaminated food.

FSIS and the company say they are concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers' freezers.

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged to destroy them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
