SMMUSD Sends Bulletin Warning of Suspicious Man in a Car Near John Adams Middle School

A young woman encountered a man while walking on Pico near 25th Street, who suggested she get in his car

Good evening SMMUSD families of Samohi, JAMS, Grant and Rogers students,

We were notified today (Sunday afternoon) that a police report was filed by a young woman who encountered a man while walking on Pico Blvd near 25th Street, who pulled up to her on the wrong side of the street and started talking to her and suggested she get in his car. She is not one of our students and is over the age of 18.

The young woman was able to ignore his suggestions and got home safely, and notified the Santa Monica Police Department, who are investigating her report.

We take reports of this nature seriously and felt that even though this activity was not against a school-age child, it is important to notify our families in the neighboring areas.

Unfortunately, we do not have a good description of the man or car at this time. We will be working with SMPD in the morning and will let you know if we have any additional information.

As always, it is incumbent of parents and students to be aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior and loitering within 100 feet of any K-12th grade school or in nearby areas.

If your student walks to school without adult supervision, we encourage you to always make sure they walk with a buddy or group, when possible. Please also remind your students to never talk to strangers and report any unusual behavior to a trusted adult. If you would like to report a concerning incident, please call the police dispatch at 310-458-8491. For any emergency, please call 911.

The safety and health of all students is our top priority and we appreciate your support as we work together for our students.

Thank you.
