Four Years for DUI Death

Woman faces four years for DUI death of Australian rugby player

A 28-year-old woman pleaded no contest Thursday to vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in the August 2012 death of a retired Australian professional rugby player who was vacationing in Santa Monica with his family, prosecutors said.

Cara Maree Cameron of Westchester was allegedly drunk on Aug. 21, 2012, when she struck Gary Mara as he crossed the street. He was with his wife and 8-year-old daughter to celebrate his 50th birthday, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Mara died after being rushed to an area hospital.

Cameron faces up to four years in prison in addition to paying $100,000 in restitution to Mara’s family, the district attorney’s office said.

She is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 17.

Mara came from a family of rugby players. His father, Bob Mara, is in the Hall of Fame of the Balmain Tigers, for whom the younger Mara made his professional debut. -LA Times
