SMC PRESENTS SPRING LITERARY SERIES

Nonfiction, Fiction, & Poetry Readings Begin March 4

Santa Monica College is pleased to present the Spring 2014 Literary Series, featuring a line-up of distinguished authors and poets discussing and reading from their works. The series starts on March 4.

All lectures in the series are FREE and are held at 11:15 a.m. in Humanities & Social Science Lecture Hall 165 on the main SMC campus, 1900 Pico Blvd., Santa Monica. Seating is on a first-arrival basis.

The Spring 2014 series line-up is:

• Tuesday, March 4: Faith Adiele: “Flying Igbos: African, Asian, & American Journeys.” The award-winning author, artist, and community activist who is the subject of the PBS documentary “My Journey Home” is currently finishing a memoir that completes the story that began in the film.

• Tuesday, April 8: Richard Lange: “Now, Gods, Stand Up for Bastards: A Reading.” The author of the collection “Dead Boys” and the novels “Angel Baby” and “This Wicked World” received a 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship and the 2008 American Academy of Arts and Letters Rosenthal Family Foundation Award for Fiction.

• Thursday, May 15: Charles Hood: “From the South Pole to the North Pole: Poetry from the Edges of the Map.” The poet, photographer, and curator who has been awarded the Hollis Summers Poetry Prize is currently working on a novel, a book about trees in Los Angeles, and poetry that surveys the moons of our Solar System.

Now in its 11th year, the SMC literary series has brought to campus such acclaimed writers as Khaled Hosseini (author of the bestselling “The Kite Runner”), Audrey Niffenegger (author of the bestselling “Time Traveler’s Wife”), and Jonathan Safran Foer (author of “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close”).

The series is sponsored by the SMC Associates (www.smc.edu/associates) – a private organization that funds speakers and special programs on the Santa Monica College campus – and the SMC English Department.
