Bernie Sanders Makes Unscheduled Hourlong Visit to the Santa Monica Pier

Sanders Campaign Makes California a Priority as Campaign Comes Down to Wire

What better place for a 73 year old to close out a US Presidential campaign, then a 100 year old pier?

Bernie Sanders made a surprise visit this afternoon on the Santa Monica Pier. He looked like any other grandfather, as he rode the Pier's 120 year old carousel with his grandson.

Sanders shook hands and stopped for photos and mingled with the always huge summer crowd on the pier. For more than an hour Sunday along the shops, restaurants and amusement park rides of the California landmark. The Vermont senator reminded voters about the state's California primary, urging them to vote.

Sanders stopped by a charity "Pedal on the Pier" fundraiser, telling people riding on stationary bikes that the U.S. should have "an economy that works for all people, not just the one percent."

Sanders and his wife, Jane, wrapped up the excursion by standing alongside grandchildren Dylan and Ella Driscoll as the kids sat atop horses and rode on the Santa Monica Carousel.
