Calvin Gullett, 34, arrested for knifing an employee of Pier burger Santa Monica Pier

On September 7 2016 at about 10:52 a.m. the suspect entered the Pier Burger restaurant at 330 Santa Monica Pier. The suspect demanded food from the employees. The suspect was denied service. The suspect proceeded to walk into the kitchen area of the restaurant and assault an employee with a knife.

The victim was struck multiple times. The suspect attempted to attack another victim/employee but did not strike the second victim. The suspect fled the area. Officers responded to the area and located the suspect on the beach/sand just north of the Pier deck. The suspect did not comply with officers and a Taser was deployed to make an arrest. The suspect was taken in to custody and evidence of the crime was located nearby. The victim was treated at the scene by Santa Monica Fire Department Paramedics. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment to his injuries. The victim is still hospitalized but in stable condition, said Lt. Saul Rodriguez, spokesman for the Santa Monica Police Department

In custody: Gullett, Calvin Earl (M/B DOB - 08/18/82 homeless). Booked for 664/187 PC-Attempt Murder, 245 PC – Assault with a Deadly Weapon and 1203.2(a)PC – Probation violation. The case will be presented to the District Attorney's Office for review and filing consideration on September 9, 2016. Gullet is currently be held with No Bail at Los Angeles County Jail.

Update: Man Charged with Stabbing Employee at Santa Monica Pier Eatery

A 34-year-old man was charged today with stabbing a Santa Monica Pier restaurant employee after allegedly demanding free food, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced.

Calvin Earl Gullett (dob 8/18/82) faces one felony count of attempted murder, two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon, a knife, and one misdemeanor count of petty theft.

Case SA093841 includes allegations that Gullett inflicted great bodily injury and was convicted in Little Rock, Ark., of residential burglary in 2002 and in Los Angeles for second-degree commercial burglary and criminal threats earlier this year.

Arraignment is scheduled today in Department W30 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Airport Branch.

It is alleged that Gullett entered a Santa Monica burger place and stabbed an employee and chased two others with a knife on Sept. 7, prosecutors said. According to the criminal complaint, the defendant had stolen the knife he used earlier in the day from a retail store, prosecutors added.

Bail for Gullett is scheduled at $2.1 million. If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of 48 years to life in state prison.

The case remains under investigation by the Santa Monica Police Department.
