Getting Away From it All Loews Coronado Bay Resort San Diego, California

A glass of champagne as you check in to the hotel means the rat race is officially over

San Diego is a critical distance from Los Angeles: just far enough away from to feel as though you've escaped the rat race. Coronado Island, across the bay from San Diego via a high, arched bridge, takes you another step further from your harried life. The Loews Coronado Bay Resort, five miles down a narrow strip of sand from Coronado Island, takes you as far as you can go without getting on a boat. Obligations and worries drift away with the sea breeze as you open your car door on the 15-acre landscaped peninsula. Seagulls float overhead and shore birds roam the rocks surrounding the vacation resort. Flamboyant yachts clang gently against the dock of the neighboring marina.

You are definitely away from it all.

To emphasize the point, you will be offered a glass of champagne as you check in to the hotel. The rat race is officially over.

From now on, Loews will take care of your every need, from over-the-counter medication to ease the headache of your 100-mile drive to an elegant dinner with local produce and fine wine. Did you forget to pack your bathing suit? They've got it. Your son forgot to throw his boogie board into the trunk? They'll loan you one. Though you may be tempted to drive into quaint Coronado Island's village to stroll the boutiques, you will not have to leave the Loews resort if you don't feel like climbing into your car.

The resort is built around the three-swimming-pool courtyard, which provides a warm, homey feel. The airy, two-story lobby gives panoramic views of the San Diego Harbor with inviting seating and the option to enhance your relaxation with a full offering from the bar.

A short walk takes you to the marina with rentals for a variety of boats and Jet Skis. If you are not up for a slightly longer walk to the beach, a shuttle will bring you to the Loews' luxury beach area, with loungers, umbrellas, towels - and, yes, boogie boards - provided for your pleasure.

Each room has a comfortable array of furniture, allowing for seating and work other than on the bed. An empty refrigerator means you can save your leftovers from the delicious on-site restaurants or stock up on essentials from the Coronado grocery store. In the spacious counter-generous bathroom, a separate shower allows for a deep soaking tub. We enjoyed the Keurig coffeemaker and the free Wi-Fi.

All Loews are pet-friendly. So your four-legged (or two-legged or multi-legged) companions can join you in this relaxing vacation paradise.
