Santa Monica & Malibu Give Beachgoers Free Sunscreen From Kiosks. No, Seriously

Los Angeles County Program designed to deter solar radiation, the single largest cause of skin cancer

7/25/18: A new program at Santa Monica and Malibu beaches this summer will give away sunscreen, UCLA announced today.

Fifty free sunscreen kiosks will be installed this summer in the 2 beach cities, with another eight around Los Angeles County.

UCLA Health and the nonprofit IMPACT Melanoma sponsored the installation of the kiosks manufactured by BrightGuard. The product itself is SPF 30.

"I know a lot of parents are really vigilant about putting sunscreen on the children ... (but they should) remember to take care of their own skin health too," UCLA Health dermatologist Dr. Jennifer Hsiao told NBC4 during an unveiling event at the Santa Monica Pier. "And hopefully the kiosks will help be reminders that after you help your child, put it on yourself."

UCLA beach volleyball professional Sinjin Smith, a skin cancer survivor, was among those on hand for the unveiling.

Sponsors of the program said 50 kiosks will be installed in Santa Monica and Malibu, and eight others will be placed around Los Angeles County. The kiosks are expected to remain in place until Oct. 31.
