SamoHi Places Second in the National Ocean Science Bowl Finals in Washington DC

As a second place prize, thee Samohi Team won a Trip to Coastal Southern Virginia in July 2019

On April 14, 2019 santa monica high school placed second in the 22nd Annual National Ocean Science Bowl Finals.

The finals carried the theme "Observe the Ocean; Secure the Future" in Washington DC.

The students participated in field trips and lectures with other teams from 33 states.

The competition consisted of team challenge questions, buzzer segments, and science expert briefings. Team members include Teddy Berger, Ryan Chien, Ireland Neville, Donny Sanders, Derek Wen and Coach Ingo Gaida. The Award was presented by the President of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, Jonathan W White.

During the 2 day competition, participants stayed at the Liason Washington Capital Hill Hotel in Washington DC. The Samohi Team visited the Smithsonian National Zoo, Conservation Biology Institute, ThinkOcean Hill, the Capitol and the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History . Other teams visited NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction , Anacostia Boat Tour, National Museum of the U.S. Navy, National Aquarium, Mr. Trash Wheel, and the Dynamic Systems & Control Lab at John Hopkins University.

The winning team was from Albany High School in Northern California. As a Second Place prize, the Samohi Team won a Trip to Coastal Southern Virginia in July 2019.
