Fearless Fashion at the Skirball: A Look Back at the 1960's

Rudi envisioned that his clothing would make people feel comfortable through their inner and their outer self.

Do you know or remember what fashion was like in the 1960's? "Fearless Fashion" at the Skirball is a costume show presenting fashion as art in the 1960's. It is well worth seeing this exhibit. Each costume is a piece of art expressing the freedom to dream, dance, and be seen. It is fun, colorful, and full of drama.

This exhibition tells the story about a fashion designer, Rudi Gernreich. He was inspired by fashion and wanted to inspire others to feel free to express themselves. Rudi wanted to make art that defines the expressions of people's thoughts, feelings, and imagination.

When Rudi was 16, he and his mother decided to leave Austria and immigrate to Los Angeles. They did so because Rudi and his mother were Jewish and at that time it was not safe to remain there.

In Los Angeles, Rudi began to make clothing that demonstrated to others how it feels to have freedom. To have the freedom of deciding who you want to be and what actions you want to take to become the best person you could possibly be.

Rudi wanted to follow his dreams as a dancer and then fashion designer, free to move, free to dream big. This show is inspiring to see how Rudi accomplished anything he wanted and learned never to give up.

What types of clothing make you feel like you? Rudi envisioned that his clothing would make people feel comfortable through their inner and their outer self.

Come take a look! Go to the Skirball Center Museum to see "Fearless Fashion" from the 60's come alive.
