Public Library to Host an All Day Celebration of All Things Canine, But Dogs are Not Welcome

Fine, you can bring your service dog to celebrate the Dog Days of Summer! at SMPL August 24, 2019

Santa Monica Public Library presents Dog Days @ the Library, a day filled with fun dog-related activities on Saturday, August 24, 2019. On this day, we are honoring dogs by recognizing the important roles they play in people's lives. In addition to giving love and companionship, dogs help humans in countless ways such as keeping us safe as watchdogs, assisting as service animals, and aiding in search and rescue.

Main Library (601 Santa Monica Blvd.) will host an all-day celebration:

10:30 am: Kick off the day with a special family story time featuring Let's Read with Gleam!

11:00 am to 1:00 pm: Join us for ten canine craft and tech activity stations. Bring a small photo of Fido and turn it into a button, decorate a doggy bandana, and more. Youth can read to a therapy dog from Paws 2 Read to complete their summer Reading goals. Call 310-458-8621 to reserve a time slot. Learn about pet adoption and other services from the Santa Monica Animal Shelter, Forte Animal Rescue and Michelson Found Animal Foundation. There will even be some furry friends available for adoption.

1:00 pm: Cap off the day with a heartwarming dog-umentary that follows five spirited pups in their quest to become Guide Dogs for the Blind. See smpl.org for title.

In the spirit of the day, you can donate items for the Santa Monica Animal Shelter from August 1 to 31. Donation bins and wish lists available at all library locations. You can also tag a picture of your lit-loving dog on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter for a pooch-tastic prize! #SMPLDogDays
