SMPD Arrests Man with Rifle at 18th St. and Santa Monica Blvd

"Suspect refused and barricaded himself behind a dumpster in the alley..."

On September 20, 2019 at approximately 1:30am, officers were dispatched to the area of 1800 block of Santa Monica for a loud disturbance being caused by a male yelling and screaming. Upon arrival, officers can hear the yelling and screaming coming from the alley.

As they made their way down the alley, a light was shone in their direction. Officers saw a man armed with a rifle. The officers took a position of cover and began to order the suspect to surrender.

The suspect refused to surrender, and barricaded himself behind a dumpster in the alley.

Members from the Crisis Negotiation Team were on scene and try to reason with the suspect who informed them he had multiple weapons. SWAT was activated due to the call evolving into a barricade suspect situation.

At 515 am, The Crisis Negotiation Team convinced the suspect to put the rifle down. SWAT deployed a diversionary device to get the suspect to move away from the rifle. The suspect rad and the police sent in the dogs, due to the suspect stating he had multiple weapons.

The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained by the K9. He is described as a male, black in his late 30's. The rifle was determined to be an Air Soft Rifle.
