Topping Off Ceremony on Discovery Building at Santa Monica High School

The Discovery Building is set to open for the start of the 2021-2022 school year.

1/30: Would that I could aligned the world and its intricacies similar to the delightful "Steeling Topping Out" ceremony, - given by the McCarthy Building Companies Inc. on the grounds of Santa Monica High school on Jan 30, 2020.

It consisted of having the last steel beam hoisted in place on the new building's steel framework, after the guests, teachers, engineers, structural officials, construction workers, educational officials, Santa Monica politicians and assorted students had signed it.

The principal Dr. Shelton and project Chief Operations Officer Carey Upton spoke graciously. The sun began setting as the beam was lowered into place, adding a glow to the space.

The structure is named the Discovery Building. It includes 43 classrooms, labs, indoor and outdoor dining facilities, an Olympic size swimming pool and a 300 car garage. It is scheduled to open during the 2021-22 school year.

The presentation closed with the SamoHi choir singing its Alma Mater. Such youthful enthusiasm!

The new Discovery Building is replacing the existing Science and Technology Buildings, which were demolished last summer.

"The new addition will transform the Samohi campus to support the 21st-century, future-ready learning, serving the school community with flexibility and sustainability for the future years to come," said the District in a press release.
