Even during a pandemic, Hollywood must carry on. The film franchise considers the possibility that we are all living in a franchise.

But nevertheless, the fourth incarnation of the franchise that postulates we are all living in a simulation, is now being filmed in the City by the Bay. And yes, it does star Keanu Reeves.

Following the release of The Matrix Revolutions, the Wachowskis voiced their disinterest in making another Matrix film. However, in March 2017, The Hollywood Reporter released information stating a fourth installment was in development with director Zak Penn writing the screenplay.

The sequel film was officially confirmed in August 2019, with the announcement that Lana Wachowski was returning to "co-write, direct, and produce The Matrix 4" as a co-production between Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures. Additionally, both Reeves and Moss confirmed that they would reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively.

In addition to Reeves and Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith will return as Niobe, along with Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian and Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson.

Other confirmed roles include newcomers to the series Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jessica Henwick as the film's leads, as well as actors Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Groff, Toby Onwumere, Eréndira Ibarra, Priyanka Chopra, and Andrew Caldwell. Production on the film began in February 2020, and is currently scheduled for release on December 22, 2021.

In response to the news, Lilly Wachowski stated that she was unable to return for the fourth film due to her role in producing the TV series Work in Progress, although she expressed approval of the film's creation without her involvement.
