Recall Gascon Campaign Vows to Challenge County Clerk Decision to Hold No Recall Election for George Gascon

"He generates a lot of controversy, a lot of opposition. I don't know why the electeds would want to keep (Gascon) around."

There will be no recall election for George Gascon this November, says the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters Monday afternoon. Over 715,000 signatures were collected by proponents of a recall. However, about one third of them (195,000) were held to be invalid. This leaves LA County with less than the 5% of voters necessary to recall a County official.

Consequently, the controversial prosecutor and Los Angeles County District Attorney will not face a recall election this year. "The effort to recall L.A. DA @GeorgeGascon has FAILED to qualify for the ballot. The Registrar-Recorders office announced only 520,050 of the 715k+ signatures it collected were valid. It needed 566,857." tweeted Bill Melugin of Fox News.

"We have some unfortunate and very bad news," said KABC's John Phillips, who has been a vocal proponent of the recall of Gascon. Speaking on Philips' daily local news talk program on AM 790, Royal Oakes, the Chairman of the Committee to Recall George Gascon vowed to challenge the disqualification in Court. "We have plenty of lawyers. We were banned from observing the count. Now we get the results today, and obviously we're going to deal with this in the Court."

"There's a lot of widows of victims, including the widows of police officers, who are outraged. When you have your heart and soul in it and are looking for justice, that's what you do."

"He generates a lot of controversy, a lot of opposition. I don't know why the electeds would want to keep (Gascon) around."

Thepress release from the LA County Registrar Recorder reads as follows: Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Completes Petition Verification for District Attorney Recall Attempt

Petition found insufficient to qualify the recall for the ballot

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) Dean C. Logan announced the RR/CC has completed the examination and verification of all 715,833 petition signatures submitted for the recall of Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascon.

Based on the examination and verification, which was conducted in compliance with the statutory and regulatory requirements of the California Government Code, Elections Code, and Code of Regulations, 520,050 signatures were found to be valid and 195,783 were found to be invalid. To qualify the recall for the ballot, the petition required 566,857 valid signatures; therefore, the petition has failed to meet the sufficiency requirements and no further action shall be taken on the petition.

A summary breakdown of the invalid signatures is as follows:

The RR/CC has notified the proponents of these findings. Per California Elections Code § 11301 and Government Code § 6253.5, proponents of the recall petition may examine the petition signatures if desired, provided that such examination must commence no later than 21 days after the certification of insufficiency of the petition.
