Selma, California Police Officer Killed in the Line of Duty

Suspect detained in second killing of California law enforcement official in 2023

1.31.23: The Fresno Co Sheriff tweeted at 11:45 am - Shots fired on Pine near Mitchell in Selma. One Selma Police officer struck, transported to hospital. Condition is unknown. One person of interest has been detained. As a precaution, Eric White Elementary was placed on lock down. Multiple agencies investigating.

Selma Police Chief Rudy Alcaraz & Fresno Sheriff John Zanoni say the officer struck by gunfire has died. Law enforcement agencies are lining up the streets outside of CRMC Hospital.

The officer, who was with the Selma Police Department, was rushed to the hospital. According to a report from KMPH-TV, a FOX-affiliate station in Fresno, the officer died at the hospital. According to the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, the department that is handling the investigations, the shooting suspect was taken into custody.

The shooting prompted a brief lockdown at Eric White Elementary School, which is located just blocks away from the shooting scene. After the lockdown was lifted, authorities announced parents can safely pick their students up from school at a designated location.

This is the second shooting death of a California Law Enforcement officer in 2023, the first being Darnell Calhoun, a Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy.

A Selma police officer was shot and killed by a suspect in the line of duty in a residential neighborhood in the Fresno County city on Tuesday. The fatal shooting occurred around 11:45 a.m. in the 2600 block of Pine Street, just west of Highway 99 and south of Rose Avenue.

The officer was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno but died there later, Selma Police Chief Rudy Alcaraz said in an update near the scene around 4:05 p.m.

The officer was not immediately identified out of a respect for privacy of the family, Alcaraz said. Around 1:20 p.m. the sheriff’s office announced a person of interest had been detained. FCSO said there at that time said there were no outstanding suspects.
