West Bloomfield Township, Michigan – March 12, 2026 (Updated approximately 11:00 AM PST / 2:00 PM local time) – Authorities have confirmed that the suspect in today's incident at Temple Israel synagogue is dead, with no fatalities among congregants, staff, or children reported so far. The suspect remains the only confirmed fatality, though one security guard was injured.

The incident began when an armed individual—reportedly carrying a rifle—intentionally rammed a truck (or vehicle) into the front of Temple Israel, one of the largest Reform Jewish congregations in the United States, located at 5725 Walnut Lake Road near the intersection of Walnut Lake and Drake roads. The vehicle penetrated the building, caught fire, and produced thick black smoke visible from the scene. Shots were fired in an exchange between the suspect and synagogue security personnel, who "engaged the threat" and ultimately neutralized the attacker.Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, along with West Bloomfield police and other officials, provided updates confirming the suspect's death following the shootout.

A security guard was struck by the vehicle and injured (knocked unconscious in some reports), but no other injuries or casualties have been confirmed among those inside the synagogue, including the preschool/early childhood center and staff. All children (approximately 140 students, though the K-12 school was not in session today), teachers, and personnel are accounted for and safe.

Multiple agencies responded, including Oakland County Sheriff's deputies, West Bloomfield Police, Farmington Hills Police, Michigan State Police, FBI personnel, and ATF representatives. The FBI is assisting in the investigation of the apparent vehicle-ramming and active shooter situation. The scene has been secured, and a shelter-in-place advisory for nearby areas was lifted by mid-afternoon.

The Jewish Federation of Detroit initially activated precautionary lockout protocols for affiliated Jewish institutions across the area (no one in or out as a safety measure), with nearby schools placed on secure hold or lockdown status. These measures were later lifted as the threat was resolved. A family reunification center was set up to assist parents and community members.

As of the latest updates: No fatalities among synagogue attendees or the public.

The suspect is deceased (fatally shot by security in the exchange).

One security guard injured (non-life-threatening).

No confirmed motive has been released; the investigation is ongoing, including whether the suspect acted alone and any potential explosives or additional threats.

The incident is being treated as a serious attack on a Jewish institution amid heightened national concerns about antisemitism.

Temple Israel, which includes a preschool/daycare and serves a large congregation, has been central to the local Jewish community. Officials and community leaders, including responses from political figures and international statements, have condemned the attack and expressed relief at the limited casualties due to rapid security response.

The situation is no longer active, though law enforcement continues scene processing and investigation. Residents are advised to avoid the area as cleanup and forensics proceed. Community members should monitor official sources—including the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, West Bloomfield Police, FBI Detroit field office, and the Jewish Federation of Detroit—for further developments, rather than relying on unverified reports. This remains a developing story. More details on the suspect's identity, motive, and any recovered evidence are expected as the investigation progresses.
