One healthy male mountain lion has made Griffith Park, in the range's eastern reaches, his domain and dinette for nearly two years. On the flip side, a cougar that would have...

  • L.A., SM Building on Fault Lines in Absence of Maps that State Won't Fund

    Updated Jan 3, 2014

Somehow, it didn’t seem that it was the end of the story back in August when the Los Angeles Times brought to people’s attention that L.A. officials had approved the huge Millennium Hollywood development without checking to see if it sits on top of an active earthquake fault, which it very well might. It quickly became apparent that a handful of other proposed projects might also be at risk because California officials never finished officially mapping 300 earthquake faults in the state, and local governments were poised to...

  • A Nativity Story, SM-Style

    Updated Jan 1, 2014

One of the most contentious debates surrounding the so-called “War on Christmas” in recent memory involves Santa Monica, Calif., a place once so filled with the holiday spirit it was nicknamed the “City of the Christmas Story.” Today, the situation in Santa Monica is starkly different. After housing a 14-scene nativity display for nearly six decades in Palisades Park, atheist pushback led officials to ban all unattended displays last year. This meant that the privately owned nativity was no longer welcome in the locatio...

On Christmas morning, the beaches of Los Angeles were packed with surfers and sunbathers, with no shortage of outdoor enthusiasts taking part in other recreational activities. “I usually spend (Christmas) in a very, very cold Boston,” Christine Lam said during her beach picnic. “It’s nice to have a second family. A...

It came toward them across the walkway, knocking over a trash can and a booth near a patch of grass. They said they expected the car to stop at this point. Instead, the vehicle swerved to the l...
