"La Corona" Screening and Talk With Isabel Vega

September 29, 2014

Santa Monica College is pleased to present a screening and discussion of "La Corona" by SMC's National Hispanic Heritage Month speaker Isabel Vega. The FREE event will be held Oct. 9 at 11:15 a.m. in Art Lecture Hall 214 on the main campus, 1900 Pico Blvd. Seating is on a first-arrival basis.

Vega, who made the Oscar-nominated documentary with Amanda Micheli, will talk about the film, which explores the lives of women in prison in Bogotá, Colombia, through a unique beauty pageant. Though accused as criminals, the women are also victims who face and must counter extreme poverty and profound abuse, and who will do what they need to do to survive. Ironically, life inside the prison is better – and safer – for many of these women than life on the outside.

The presentation is in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month – recognizing Hispanic and Latino American heritage and culture – and a part of SMC's Global Citizenship Lecture Series. Sponsored by the SMC Associates (www.smc.edu/associates), SMC Global Citizenship Council, SMC Office of Public Programs, SMC Latino Center/Adelante Program, and SMC English Department.

For information, call (310) 434-4003.
