Girls on the Run 5K Morning of Sunday, December 7th

Using the power of running to teach girls they can do anything, Girls on the Run LA County will hold its annual Fall 5K celebration run at Dockweiler Beach in Playa Del Rey on Sunday, Dec. 7 beginning at 7:30 am.

A record-setting 600 girls will be there, joined by an additional 800 supporters including volunteer coaches, family members, community members and race volunteers.

Peyton List, star of Disney's hit TV show Jessie, is scheduled to participate. She is a longtime enthusiast and comes to the 5K as often as her schedule allows. http://gotrla.org/peyton-list-gotrla/

It will be a festive morning for the girls who have trained since September. All activities will begin at 7:30 am including face painting, "happy hair" spray paint sessions, temporary tattoos and other special surprises. The 5K kicks off at 8:45 am and should last approximately an hour. Registration is open and information can be found at http://gotrla.org/5k/.

The 5K run is the celebratory culmination of a 12-week after-school program, that

empowers girls and teaches them to be strong in mind, body and spirit. Using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running, Girls on the Run addresses bullying, the importance of physical activity, healthy eating, body image, and community service. http://gotrla.org/

"What impresses me most about Girls on the Run are the weekly lessons teaching vital tools for upcoming life situations," says LA-area mom and assistant coach Nancy Massimino. "Each practice includes exercise and running, plus also covers really practical skills for things like bullying and social media. Girls on the Run fosters confidence and kindness within each girl."

LA Parent magazine and LAParent.com is the event's official media sponsor. Drip Drop Elite Hydration Science is the hydration sponsor. Midnight Oil is donating the banners. Volunteer support comes from Athleta, Gamma Phi Beta, NBCU Women's Network, Occidental College Cross Country Teams, NikeTown Los Angeles, Black Girls Run! LA, Girl Up!
