Minnesota mall attacker referenced Allah before stabbing rampage, St. Cloud Police Chief William Blair Anderson said.

ISIS claimed responsibility after a knife-wielding man injured eight people at a mall in central Minnesota Saturday evening, a bloody rampage during which he reportedly asked victims whether they were Muslim, shouting "Allah." As of Sunday morning, six of the nine victims had been treated and released from a local hospital and all were expected to survive their injuries.

An off duty police officer from another city who just happened to be at Macy's shot the man, preventing many further injuries, police said. His name was officer Jason Faulkner.

He identified himself as a police officer, told the man to get down, and he did not but instead charged the officer with a knife. He shot the attacker, who still attempted to get up with the large knife, and Faulkner shot him again. Faulkner was uninjured in the incident.

ISIS-related media on Sunday morning claimed responsibility for the attack. "The executor of the stabbing attacks in Minnesota yesterday was a soldier of the Islamic State and carried out the operation in response to calls to target the citizens of countries belonging to the crusader coalition," the statement said.

Police responded to reports of several stabbings at the Crossroads Mall at around 8:30 p.m. local time. Witnesses also reported hearing gunshots at the scene.

The attack occurred on the same evening of the 2016 Manhattan explosion. The 2016 New Jersey bombing occurred on the same day.

Police were searching for other co-conspirators. Police have not released the perpetrators name, nor where in the area he lived. The attacker whose name has not yet been released, is described as a St. Cloud resident with previous police interactions, but nothing violent.

The area is home to a large Somali population. Isis has recruited heavily within that population, and at least nine men have been arrested previously, for their connections to international terrorism.

He entered South East through Sears, and ended in Macy's, there is video of much of the incident, said Lt. Lori. "many of the stores had their own independent surveillance systems. Macy's store does have video of his encounter with the off duty officer," she said at a press conference following the incident.

"We are working in cooperation with Federal authorities, said the police chief. "Yesterday was a horrible day for the entire nation," he said.
