Life After Death: Now You Can Be Green In This Life, And The Next.

Eternal Meadow Opens at Woodlawn Cemetery, Mausoleum and Mortuary in Santa Monica.

On Saturday April 1, at 11:00 a.m. Woodlawn Cemetery, Mausoleum and Mortuary will celebrate the opening of Eternal Meadow, a newly developed green burial section that offers and eco-friendly interment option.

In keeping with the city's commitment to sustainability, green burial has minimal environmental impacts such as no metals, cement vaults or use of embalming fluids.

Eternal Meadow was an idea that Cindy Tomlinson, Cemetery Administrator proposed to the City of Santa Monica. The new section was designed as a naturalistic meadow featuring California native grasses, wildflowers and nectar sources for pollinators and endangered Monarch butterflies.

In 2015, Woodlawn Cemetery was certified as a Hybrid Cemetery by the Green Burial Council, a leading accreditation agency in the green burial movement.

For over 100 years families in the Santa Monica area and beyond have chosen to commemorate their loved ones at Woodlawn. Woodlawn is wholly owned and operated by the City of Santa Monica, and is the only city-owned mortuary in the United States.

There are no residency requirements for interments and Woodlawn is non-sectarian.

That day's program will feature guest speakers and light refreshments as well as Woodlawn's Third Annual presentation of the Living History Tour.

Costumed guides will portray noted personalities resting at Woodlawn. These might include actor Glenn Ford, Astronaut Sally Ride, and Venice founder and Real Estate baron Abbott Kinney. They will share their stories and contributions to history and society during tours of the landmark facility.

Woodlawn Cemetery, Mortuary & Mausoleum is located at 1847 14th Street in Santa Monica. It is owned and operated by the city of Santa Monica. For more information call 310-458-8717 or email woodlawn.cemetery@smgov.net.
