Topics included marine biology, physical oceanography, marine geology, and marine policy/ chemistry

This Saturday February 23, 2019 Santa Monica High Schools Ocean Science Bowl Team won the 20th Annual Los Angeles Regional Competition at JPL in Pasadena.

"Team members included Ireland Neville, Ryan Chien, Teddy Berger, Derek Wen, Donny Sanders, and coach Ingo Gaida.

The competition consists of 4 player teams answering questions based in marine biology, physical oceanography, marine geology, and marine policy/ chemistry related topics," said Chien.

"The game is in multiple choice format and teams buzz in to answer, just like jeopardy. Samohi started the first 5 rounds undefeated, clinching the first seed. They then moved into the winner's bracket, in which they lost their first game to Arcadia High School, knocking Samohi into the Challenger's bracket. Samohi fought their way through the Challenger's bracket, defeating University High School and eventually Arcadia twice in a row to take home the LA Surf Bowl Championship."

"Samohi will be representing Southern California during April in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl Competition in Washington DC," Chien said.
