Homeless who sleep in public where anyone can access them are vulnerable to criminals who may want to rob, assault, or even murder them.

September 23, 2021 - At approximately 3:00 am on Wednesday morning, Santa Monica police received multiple calls regarding the sound of shots fired. Shortly thereafter, the victim himself called police, reporting he'd been shot in the face.

The victim had been sleeping in his car in the area of Ocean Avenue and Pacific Street. Two suspects approached his car, demanded he give them the keys to the vehicle, and then abruptly shot him. Following this assault, they fled in another vehicle at a high rate of speed.

The victim was located by police and transported to a local hospital where he is in stable condition.

Santa Monica Police Department personnel continue to gather evidence related to the incident.

Earlier in the month, police arrested a man for attempting to rape homeless women asleep on the beach. Crimes against unsheltered individuals are easy to perpetrate.

Anyone with possible video footage or any additional information regarding the Wednesday morning shooting is encouraged to contact Detective Nicole Murphy with the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) at (310) 458-8941, [email protected]; or the Watch Commander's office at (310) 458-2249.
