"Santa Monica City Hall will be lit in pink this evening to support the women of Santa Monica, California, and the United States to care for their own reproductive health without government interference," City Councilmember Phil Brock posted on Facebook.
By 1 p.m., a crowd had formed for a demonstration in front of the federal courthouse in downtown Los Angeles.
Rallies are also planned for 6 p.m. at the intersection at Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue in Hollywood and 7 p.m. at 647 N. San Vicente Blvd. in West Hollywood. There were spontaneous demonstrations near the Federal building in Westwood.
In California, Gov. Gavin Newsom pledged to take action on legislation to protect patients and providers in California against abortion bans in other states.
Newsom promised to sign legislation subsidizing women who reside in other states, and seek abortions in California. High tech companies based in California, including Facebook and Apple, said they would reimburse employees seeking "therapeutic abortions" up to $10,000, as part of their health insurance policies. Nike, Uber, Intuit, JP Morgan, and many other companies announced similar policies.
Some in Washington expressed surprise at the opinion, which had been leaked 3 months ago to politico.com. The identity of the leaker is still not known.
US Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican who voted for justices Gursuch and Kavanaugh, said that she had been deceived by those two justices. She said they had told her in private meetings that they respected precedent, which she took to mean they would not vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. They did in fact join the 6-3 majority.
