When Confronted by Police, Shooter at Michigan State University Shoots and Kills Himself

Shooters identity, motive, connection to MSU remain unknown at this time, says Dep. Police Chief Rosman.

Update, 2/14: MSU shooter had no connection to Michigan State University that authorities can find, local police now say. "He became evil and mean after his mother died," said the shooter's father. He added he tried to get the 43 year old shooter psychological help, but the man refused to go.

12:27 am EST: Chris Rosman, Deputy Police Chief for East Lansing Michigan confirms suspect was located off campus, with fatal self inflicted gunshot wound. Confirms he is deceased.

"This truly is a nightmare that we are living tonight but we have remained laser focused on the safety of our students and staff. We believe there is only one shooter. There is no longer a threat on campus, there is no need to shelter in place. Sadly, we have 3 confirmed fatalities, in addition to 5 transported to hospital. Some of those 5 have life threatening injuries." said Dep. Chief Rosman.

12:14 am EST: CBS and ABC report the Michigan State University shooter has shot himself in Lansing after being surrounded by police.

12:04 am EST: A man matching description of Michigan State University shooter has no pulse after shooting himself. He had second weapon in backpack along with multiple magazines. Responders giving CPR. Note that these are unconfirmed reports taken from Lansing Police scanners.

11:58 pm EST from CBS News: Three people were killed and several others injured in a shooting at Michigan State University Monday night, and police are still searching for the suspect.

NYTimes: A gunman was still at large after at least five people were shot on the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing, Mich., on Monday night, the university police said.

The five injured people were transported to a hospital. "Some of those victims do have life-threatening injuries," according to the university Police Department's interim deputy police chief, Chris Rozman.

11:15 pm EST: Suspect is described as a short black male wearing a mask and cap. Students on campus are advised to shelter in place. Hundreds of police are on campus searching for this individual. Students not on campus, please do not come to campus at this time.

"Michigan State University police just released these images of the suspected shooter. He is a Black male, shorter in stature, red shoes, jean jacket, wearing a baseball cap that is navy with a lighter brim. If you see him, call police!"

2.13.23: Multiple news sources confirm that there is an active shooter situation at Michigan State University in East Lansing. ATF, FBI are on scene. 5 people are reportedly shot, all taken to hospitals. 2 have life threatening injuries

Absolutely terrifying and I hope they catch the vile, evil people responsible, quickly. Hoping for safety for these innocent students."

The news broke at 9:30 pm EST. Campus activities are cancelled this week. Several buildings are cleared, the suspect is wearing a mask and is short. Police are searching for him.
