Cryptic Graffiti on the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium: "Hobos Smoke History Burns Civic. Dies. Gleam Collects"

"Addicts drinking, doing drugs, smoking and having sex between the building and the hedges...It is a fire hazard”. But was it deliberate?

Just South of Santa Monica City Hall is the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. The historic building, where the Academy Awards were conducted in the 1950’s, is in derelict condiction as politicians debate what to do with it.

"I took these photos in the link below and others,” writes John Alle, a local resident and business owner. "Addicts drinking, doing drugs, smoking and having sex between the building and the hedges...It is a fire hazard. No fencing and no exterior security cameras anywhere."

Gleam Davis, Santa Monica's former mayor and a member of the City Council, generally favors selling off public land to developers. among them is her husband.

"A friend of mine who lives on Main Street sent me the photos attached below last week. She said the message was covered faster than the City usually covers graffiti on public buildings. Maybe Gleam was on a walk and saw it for herself….” speculates Alle.

We don’t know who graffitied the building. Or exactly what they meant with the cryptic statement.
