Sweet Lady Jane Bakery in Santa Monica Hits Permitting Glitch in Plans to Reopen

"We are working hard with the city to open the doors again very soon," the note from the owners says.

March 8, 2024 - The Sweet Lady Jane bakery branches, all of which closed to near-universal sorrow in January, has been bought by a new owner and has reopened in Beverly Hills.

However, the branch on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica closed down again. According to a sign posted on the door, the new owners, "Julie and Matt," ran into a permitting glitch with the City of Santa Monica. The previous owner reportedly failed to acquire necessary permits for some remodeling work. A notice posted next to the sign on the door from the LA County Health Department lists code violations regarding submitting plans for remodeling.

"We are working hard with the city to open the doors again very soon," the note from the owners says - which seems to indicate the problem is coming from the city of Santa Monica and not the County Health Department. Santa Monica is infamous for its hostile attitude toward small businesses, driving many of them out of the area because of the time and money needed to carry out regulatory requirements and wait for inspections.
