On Monday, the UN National Security Council held a moment of silence to honor the "Butcher of Tehran." The US Ambassador joined. The Iranian President dubbed the 'Butcher of Tehran' is confirmed dead in a helicopter crash on Sunday. Ebrahim Raisi oversaw the executions of thousands of civilians during his political career, Iranian human rights sources confirm.

"A profoundly shameful moment at the UN Security Council as the US ambassador stands for a moment of silence to honor the Butcher of Tehran," tweeted Eitan Fishburger.

"This is US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Robert Wood standing for a moment of silence in honor of the former Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi today at the UN Security Council meeting,” tweeted Kassy . "Reminder: Raisi represented the government that calls for “death to America.””

Others on Twitter noted that it could be diplomatic protocol to stand in memory of a deceased diplomat.

Raisi, Iran's foreign minister and 2 other men died in a helicopter crash near the Azeri border on Sunday. Preliminary theories are that it was related to weather (heavy fog) at the time.
