Now you too can rent bikes in downtown Santa Monica's historic Central Tower, to people from all over the world
In April 2015, Rob and Lois Wakefield founded Santa Monica Beach Bike Rentals, located in the historic Central Tower building on 4th Street in downtown Santa Monica. With a fleet of over 100 bikes, including cruisers, road bikes, electric bikes, and tandems, the shop caters to a wide range of riders. "We're a family-oriented store with bikes for all ages," Rob says. "We offer unique models like Fuji Barnabys and e-bikes, which you won't find elsewhere." The business's strong online presence, competitive pricing, and diverse selection attract a global clientele, with 85% of customers being international tourists, mainly from Europe. There are also US tourists from Florida and New York.
The shop has seen peak months with rental sales well into six figures, though a recent decline in international tourism has slowed business this summer. Santa Monica's vibrant coastal charm, with its iconic pier and scenic bike paths along the Pacific, makes it a prime destination for cyclists. The shop's proximity to the beach and well-maintained bike lanes has fueled its success, drawing families and adventure-seekers eager to explore the city's sunny streets and nearby attractions like Venice Beach or the Marvin Braude Bike Trail.
What sets Santa Monica Beach Bike Rentals apart is its ability to cater to diverse groups. "We have every bike under the sun," Lois says. "Most shops can't outfit an entire family like we can." From kids' bikes to high-performance road bikes, the shop ensures every rider finds the perfect fit. This versatility, combined with personalized service-like Rob's directions to a Spanish customer: "Three blocks down, left past the Pier, then right on Seaside"-has built a loyal customer base and a reputation for excellence.
After a decade in the bike rental business, the Wakefields are ready to embark on new adventures. "My wife's a cancer survivor," Rob shares. "We've learned to cherish every day, and now we want to tour national and state parks." Lois, who overcame stage 3 colon cancer 15 years ago through chemotherapy, surgery, and a revamped diet, credits Rob's unwavering support for her recovery. Their journey began 45 years ago when Rob, visiting from England, met Lois at an antique shop she managed in Los Angeles. Their shared passion for antiques led to several joint business ventures since their 1995 marriage.
As Santa Monica continues to draw millions of visitors annually, the bike rental business remains a staple for tourists seeking an eco-friendly way to experience the city's laid-back vibe and stunning ocean views. The shop's prime location and established reputation make it a turnkey opportunity for new owners. With the Wakefields preparing to hand over the reins, they leave behind a legacy of exceptional service and a business perfectly positioned to thrive in Santa Monica's bustling tourism market.
