A 28 year old suspect was apprehended and transported to a local hospital with gunshot wounds, following a brief foot chase
September 9, 2025--Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) officers apprehended a 28 year old suspect, following a dramatic car chase near Mary Hotchkiss Park on the afternoon of September 8, 2025. The incident, which unfolded around 2:30 p.m., culminated in Thompson sustaining self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, and being transported to UCLA Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition.
"On Monday, September 8, 2025, at approximately 3:19 p.m., using department resources, Santa Monica Police Department personnel identified a vehicle in the city that was wanted by the Los Angeles Police Department.
"Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver initially failed to yield. The vehicle ultimately stopped, and during the encounter, officers discovered the driver was suffering from an injury. The injury was not the result of actions taken by SMPD personnel and are believed to have occurred prior to the traffic stop. The Santa Monica Fire Department responded to the scene to render aid to the driver, who was ultimately transported to a local area hospital.
"The investigation is being led by the Los Angeles Police Department. For additional details, please contact LAPD. At this time, no further information is available from the Santa Monica Police Department. There is no ongoing threat to the community related to this incident."
Officers quickly subdued and apprehended him, and he was promptly transported to UCLA Medical Center for treatment. No injuries to other people were reported.
The suspect had a warrant for his arrest for homicide from the Los Angeles Police Department. Authorities are considering charges including assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon, evading police, and resisting arrest.
The area around Mary Hotchkiss Park, briefly cordoned off during the incident, has fully reopened. Santa Monica police have released little incident information, referring reporters to the Los Angeles Police Department.
