Next Week: What to eat, Where to go and What to do in O'ahu
When you're planning a family trip to Waikiki, choosing the right hotel can make all the difference, especially when you're traveling with teenagers, hoping to balance beach time, sightseeing, and a little breathing room. On our most recent stay in Oʻahu, my daughter and I checked into The Ambassador Hotel of Waikiki, while her grandparents stayed nearby in an Airbnb. That setup ended up being perfect: we had our own space, easy access to them, and a hotel that genuinely worked for all generations.
From the moment we arrived, The Ambassador felt different from some of the larger, more polished Waikiki resorts. The open-air lobby immediately set the tone. It's laid-back, breezy, and full of real Hawaiʻi vibes. There's a retro charm to the property that feels intentional rather than dated, and everything was impressively clean and well-cared for. We felt like it was the kind of place where you can relax into island life instead of rushing through it.
Spacious Rooms That Actually Work for Families
We stayed in a suite, and for family travel, the space was a game-changer. The room was big, REALLY BIG by Waikiki standards, with a separate living area and a pull-out sofa that gave us plenty of room to spread out. After long beach days and busy sightseeing mornings, it was nice not to feel like we were living on top of each other.
The bathroom was huge (always a win), and the panoramic balcony quickly became one of our favorite spots. Morning coffee, evening breezes, and those moments when you just want to sit and take it all in. With views of the Pacific Ocean just a couple of blocks away, it added so much to the stay. It's one of those details that makes a hotel feel like more than just a place to sleep.
Pool Time, Pilates, and Easygoing Days
My daughter is 14, and for her, pool time is non-negotiable. The Ambassador's third-floor pool, known as the 'Swim and Social Club,' delivered in a big way. We spent time there swimming, relaxing in cabanas, grabbing food, and we even caught a Pilates session by the pool. It felt social without being chaotic, and relaxing without being boring. This is always a tricky balance for hotels, and The Ambassador manages well.
What I appreciated most was how easy it was to build downtime into our days. Whether it was a quick dip between outings or a slower afternoon spent poolside, the hotel made it simple to shift gears depending on our energy level.
Feeling Like a Local at the Beach
Although The Ambassador isn't directly on the beach, that actually ended up being a plus for us. We used the hotel's complimentary bikes and rode over to the sister property, The Twin Fin, to pick up beach gear. From there, we'd head out for a full beach day, with rentals from the on-site Beach Candy rentals, who provided beach chairs, boogie boards, surfboards, and more.
There's something fun and adventurous about biking to the beach instead of just stepping out of your hotel room onto the sand. It made the experience feel more local, more intentional. My daughter loved it, and it felt like a mini adventure every time. (A quick note for parents: biking is best suited for older kids or teens, since it's along a main street.)
Favorite Son Restaurant Waikiki For Family Friendly Dining
One of the biggest surprises of our stay was just how good the food was. Favorite Son, the onsite restaurant, became our go-to for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and every meal delivered, which meant we were fat and happy by the end of our stay. The menu blends island flavors with Italian comfort classics in a way that's casual, satisfying, and family-friendly.
What I loved most was the convenience. When you're traveling with kids (or teens), having a reliable, easy dining option right downstairs takes so much pressure off the day. Whether we were grabbing breakfast before heading out, popping back in for lunch, or winding down with a relaxed dinner, it was always simple and always good.
Location That Makes Waikiki Easy
The Ambassador's location is another big win. It's an easy walk to the heart of Waikiki, with restaurants, shops, and activities just minutes away. At the same time, it doesn't feel overwhelming or chaotic. You get access to everything without being right in the middle of the crowds. For us, it was the perfect balance: walkable, convenient, and calm enough to truly relax.
Who This Hotel Is (and Isn't) For
I'd wholeheartedly recommend The Ambassador Hotel of Waikiki to families who don't need to be right on the beach and appreciate a little breathing room. It's especially great for families with teens (or babies/toddlers) who want pool time, space to spread out, and easy access to activities without the hefty beachfront price tag.
If you're looking for polished luxury or a resort where you never leave the property, this might not be your spot. But if you want authentic Waikiki energy, thoughtful amenities, and a place that makes family travel feel manageable (and enjoyable), The Ambassador is a fantastic option.
The Holidays in Paradise
While we visited in July, The Ambassador is leaning into a festive 'Christmas in Paradise' vibe during the holidays, with cookie decorating, Santa's Workshop, Christmas Eve movie nights by the pool, tropical Santa photos, and festive food and drink specials at Favorite Son. New Year's Eve celebrations are timed perfectly with sunset over Waikiki. Staying at The Ambassador Hotel would be an easy, family-friendly way to ring in the new year.
No matter the season, Oʻahu is always a good idea and The Ambassador Hotel of Waikiki makes a welcoming, comfortable home base for families who want to experience it all, at their own pace.
Next week, I'm sharing how we explored Oʻahu as a family, including our favorite places to eat, where we spent our days, and what made the island so special for our multigenerational family.
IF YOU GO:
Getting to Oʻahu is about to get even easier. Starting May 13, 2026, Alaska Airlines will launch a new daily seasonal nonstop flight from Hollywood Burbank Airport to Honolulu, offering another convenient option for travelers who'd rather skip LAX.
