Cat's Meow: Flossie, World's Oldest Living House Cat, Turns 30 Years Old

The Guinness World Records organization first verified and recognized her as the oldest living cat in November 2022, when she was approaching her 27th birthday.

Flossie, a remarkable British tortoiseshell cat, has officially turned 30 years old, cementing her status as the world's oldest living cat according to Guinness World Records.Born on December 29, 1995, Flossie celebrated her milestone birthday late last year, reaching an astonishing age that equates to roughly 140–160 years in human terms, depending on the conversion method used. The Guinness World Records organization first verified and recognized her as the oldest living cat in November 2022, when she was approaching her 27th birthday (equivalent to about 120 human years at the time). She has held the title ever since, outliving expectations for feline longevity.

Flossie, a domestic shorthair tortoiseshell, resides in Orpington, England, with her devoted owner, Victoria (Vicki) Green, who adopted her in 2022 through the animal welfare charity Cats Protection. Green initially thought the listing for a 27-year-old cat was a mistake, but vet records confirmed Flossie's extraordinary age. Despite challenges that come with advanced years-including significant hearing loss and reduced vision-Flossie remains affectionate, gentle, and surprisingly spry. She enjoys soft food, daily cuddles, early breakfasts, napping, and playful moments, showcasing a calm and content personality that has charmed cat lovers worldwide.

Her life story spans multiple homes: discovered as a stray near a hospital in Merseyside, she was first cared for by a hospital worker, passed through other owners and shelters, and finally found her forever home with Green. This journey of resilience, combined with consistent care, love, and veterinary attention, has helped her defy the odds.

Flossie's achievement highlights the potential for cats to thrive well into their senior years with the right environment.

While she doesn't hold the record for the oldest cat ever (that belongs to Creme Puff, who lived to 38 from 1967–2005), her ongoing record as the oldest living cat continues to inspire awe and joy.

As one admirer put it in a recent social media post, Flossie is "older than the internet" and still purring strong-a true testament to feline endurance and the power of a caring home. Happy (belated) birthday to this record-breaking senior!
