Seven Stolen Dogs Escape Slaughterhouse Transport Truck, Trek 17 km Home Safely in China

Over 10 million Chinese dogs are illegally stolen and trafficked annually for the dog meat trade.

Changchun, Jilin Province, China – March 23, 2026 – In a remarkable display of canine loyalty and determination, seven pet dogs stolen from homes in a village near Changchun have safely returned to their owners after escaping from an illegal transport vehicle and traveling approximately 17 kilometers together.

The dogs – including breeds such as a corgi, Golden Retrievers, a German Shepherd, and others – belonged to three neighboring households and were known to play together daily. They were stolen earlier this month and loaded onto a truck reportedly bound for the dog meat trade.

On March 16, 2026, while the vehicle traveled along the Changshuang Expressway, the dogs managed to break free, either by biting through restraints or escaping during transit. Rather than scattering, the group stayed united as a pack. Motorists captured nighttime video footage showing the dogs moving in formation across highways and adjacent fields, navigating traffic and unfamiliar terrain.

One German Shepherd sustained a leg injury during the escape but was not abandoned; the others surrounded and protected it at rest stops, allowing the injured dog to keep pace. Witnesses and volunteers who spotted the group online alerted local animal rescue teams, including members of stray dog aid organizations.Using tips from the public, drone searches, and village inquiries, rescuers located the dogs by March 18–19. All seven were confirmed to be the stolen pets – identifiable by collars and owner recognition – and were safely reunited with their families. The owners expressed immense relief, with some noting gratitude that the dogs avoided a tragic fate.Local police have opened an investigation into the dog theft and the suspected illegal transport operation.

The story, amplified by viral videos on social media platforms including X (formerly Twitter), has drawn widespread attention in China and internationally. Netizens have praised the dogs' pack cohesion and mutual protection, with many calling for stronger measures against pet theft and the dog meat trade. The incident highlights both the enduring bonds among companion animals and ongoing challenges related to illegal dog trafficking in parts of the country. All seven dogs are reported to be in good health following veterinary checks.

Amid China's partial dog meat bans, this escape spotlights persistent illegal trafficking, with estimates from Humane Society International indicating over 10 million dogs smuggled yearly for the trade, fueling public calls for stricter enforcement
