The production promises big laughs, memorable songs, and a timely story of women supporting one another against workplace challenges.
Santa Monica, CA - As part of its milestone 80th anniversary season, the historic Morgan-Wixson Theatre is bringing Dolly Parton's high-energy hit 9 to 5 The Musical to the Mainstage for a limited run from May 9 through June 7, 2026. The production promises big laughs, memorable songs, and a timely story of women supporting one another against workplace challenges.
Based on the 1980 hit film and featuring a book by Patricia Resnick with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton (orchestrations by Bruce Coughlin and additional work by Stephen Oremus & Alex Lacamoire), the musical follows three overworked office employees-Violet, Judy, and Doralee-who reach their breaking point with their sexist, egotistical boss. In a wild fantasy-turned-reality, they turn the tables, transform the workplace, and discover the power of friendship and collaboration in the Rolodex era. The show blends sharp comedy, heart, and a vibrant score that includes fan-favorite numbers.
Director Amy Coles, a longtime Morgan-Wixson performer who made her debut in 2006's Bye Bye Birdie, brings a fresh, female-forward perspective to the production. "I'm excited to share a story of female friendships and females working together rather than being pitted against one another," Coles said. She highlights the nuanced journeys of the lead characters, who represent different facets of womanhood and move from isolation to powerful collaboration. Coles has assembled a strong creative team, including Music Director Daniel Koh, Choreographer Holly Weber, and Producers Cori Goldberg and Spencer Johnson.
Leading the cast as Violet Newstead is Kyrsten Williams, whose portrayal draws from her own experiences as a Black woman, mom, and working actress. "This story hits home," Williams shared. "It felt like an opportunity to step into a role that reflects strength, resilience, and growth." Claire Shepard stars as Doralee Rhodes, bringing both comedy and vulnerability to the role, while Angelica Roqué plays Judy Bernly. The full ensemble includes Gregg Strouse as the boss Franklin Hart, Jr., Joan Nelson as Roz Keith, and many others in supporting and ensemble roles.
The creative team also features Scenic Designer Yelena Babinskaya, Costume Designer Kristie Mattsson, Lighting Designer Daniel Mitchener, Sound Designer Jess Cashin, Wigs by Jon Sparks, Intimacy Director Mary Zastrow, and Production Stage Manager Ashley DeFrancesco. Morgan-Wixson Technical Director William Wilday oversees the technical elements.
Why It Still Resonates in 2026
Though set in 1979, 9 to 5 continues to feel relevant. Issues like unequal power dynamics, gender roles, and workplace inequities persist in new forms. The production balances outrageous humor and romance with thought-provoking commentary, reminding audiences that real change happens when women stand together. The Morgan-Wixson Theatre, a beloved 200-seat non-equity venue at 2627 Pico Blvd., has a rich history as a hub for community theatre in Santa Monica. Generations of artists-including early appearances by James Dean and Harvey Korman, and later talents like Beanie Feldstein in its youth programs-have performed there. Now in its 80th season, the theatre continues to offer sophisticated productions alongside new works and special events.
