Arcadia Mayor Eileen Wang, Her CCP Agent Husband to be Traded for Imprisoned Hong Kong Media Mogul Jimmy Lai

Report Suggests Prisoner Swap in Works as Trump Arrives in Beijing. Jennifer Zheng Has Many CCP Sources and is Frequently Right

Beijing/Washington - As President Donald Trump touches down in Beijing on Wednesday for high-stakes talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, an unverified but notable claim has surfaced linking the fate of imprisoned Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai to the sudden legal troubles of a California mayor accused of acting as a Chinese agent.

Suspicious timing: Trump is on the way to Beijing with a planeload of American business execs, and suddenly the Mayor of Arcadia is arrested as a Chinese spy. How are these stories related?

Jennifer Zeng, a well-connected Chinese-born journalist, Falun Gong practitioner, and longtime critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) with a track record of breaking stories on China's internal affairs that have often proven accurate, reported the development on X (formerly Twitter). Citing Canadian writer and activist Sheng Xue as her source, Zeng stated that Xi's team and Trump's advance team have reportedly reached an agreement: Jimmy Lai would be granted medical parole and allowed to leave prison in exchange for the return of Eileen Wang to China.

Eileen Wang, 58, the former mayor of Arcadia, California, resigned her positions and agreed to plead guilty to a federal charge of acting as an illegal agent of the People's Republic of China. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Wang worked with her then-fiancé, Yaoning "Mike" Sun (already serving a four-year sentence for similar offenses), to promote pro-PRC propaganda through a website targeting Chinese-American audiences between late 2020 and 2022. The activities allegedly included posting content at the direction of Chinese officials, such as material downplaying abuses in Xinjiang.

The timing of the public announcement of Wang's plea deal and resignation on Monday has fueled speculation. Trump's state visit to Beijing (May 13–15) places the Jimmy Lai case on the agenda, with the U.S. president having previously pledged to raise the pro-democracy publisher's imprisonment.

Zeng's post highlighted Wang's deeper alleged role in CCP influence operations in California, including connections to politicians and business chambers. She shared earlier reporting on Wang's ties, including photos from events linked to her fiancé's activities. "The above information was disclosed by Canadian writer and my trusted friend Sheng Xue @ShengXue_ca" Zheng posted.

However, the alleged swap has drawn immediate skepticism. Prominent Hong Kong commentator and former insider Desmond Shum called the report "highly unlikely - bordering on BS," arguing that the CCP rarely acknowledges or bargains openly for espionage assets, Jimmy Lai holds far greater symbolic value as a global icon of resistance, and Xi would avoid any optics suggesting weakness during a high-profile Trump visit.

No official confirmation of any deal has emerged from U.S. or Chinese authorities. Prisoner exchanges or quiet humanitarian gestures have occurred in past U.S.-China diplomacy, but none matching this description have been verified.

The developments underscore ongoing tensions over CCP influence operations in the U.S. and the fate of high-profile political prisoners in Hong Kong. Trump's Beijing summit is expected to cover trade, Taiwan, technology, and other bilateral issues, with human rights cases like Lai's likely featuring in private discussions.

This story is developing. Further details from the Trump-Xi meetings may clarify any linkages between the Wang case and broader negotiations.
