This is not traditional liberalism. This is democratic socialism - a vision that puts heavy government intervention, dramatic tax increases on successful people and businesses, and ideological priorities ahead of practical governance
Voters in San Francisco should understand exactly what they're getting if they vote for Saikat Chakrabarti. Because they're going to get it good and hard.
Chakrabarti is not a moderate Democrat. He is a co-founder of the Justice Democrats, the group that helped launch Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the most aggressive wing of the progressive movement. He served as AOC's Chief of Staff and has been one of the key strategists behind the push to pull the Democratic Party sharply to the left.
His politics closely mirror those of Zohran Mamdani, the democratic socialist who recently won the New York City mayoral race. Both represent the same ideological wing: strong supporters of the Green New Deal, Medicare for All, massive wealth taxes, and major expansions of government control over the economy.
Chakrabarti has openly advocated for "total economic mobilization" and transforming the entire economy through sweeping industrial policy. He has pushed to abolish ICE, supported the "Defund the Police" movement in its early days, and worked tirelessly to primary more moderate Democrats.
This is not traditional liberalism. This is democratic socialism - a vision that puts heavy government intervention, dramatic tax increases on successful people and businesses, and ideological priorities ahead of practical governance. Socialism and communism caused more misery worldwide in the last century, than any other political philosophy in history. Why are young Americans, some of them, so desperate that they sign onto a philosophy their fathers and grandfathers fought to defeat?
I don't know, but San Francisco is already struggling with the results of extreme progressive policies: record homelessness spending with poor results, businesses and talent leaving the city, and persistent street disorder. Electing Saikat Chakrabarti would double down on the very ideology that created these problems.
Voters deserve to know what they're voting for. A vote for Saikat Chakrabarti is a vote to take San Francisco even further down the path of radical left-wing governance - more taxes, more regulation, more government control, and less accountability to the people who actually live and work here.
San Francisco needs real change, not more of the same failed experiment, just with a newer, more aggressive face.
