While the beach is expected to stay milder than LA County next week, crowds will probably be drawn to escape 100 degree heat in the valleys and inland areas
The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for much of Los Angeles County from Tuesday, June 23, through Thursday, June 25. Inland areas could see temperatures climbing into the mid-to-upper 80s or higher, with Downtown Los Angeles potentially reaching up to 88 degrees and valleys pushing even warmer. Officials are warning of health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, outdoor workers, and those without reliable air conditioning.
In Santa Monica, however, the marine layer and ocean breezes are forecast to keep conditions significantly milder. Local forecasts predict highs in the low to mid-70s during the midweek period, with overnight lows around 60-62 degrees. While this is warmer than typical June gloom patterns, it falls well short of the dangerous heat expected farther inland. Residents along the coast may still feel the effects of broader regional warming, especially if the marine layer weakens or burns off earlier than usual.
City officials in Santa Monica are monitoring the situation closely and remind residents that even moderate temperature increases can pose risks to those with health conditions or limited mobility. The city encourages checking on neighbors, staying hydrated, and limiting strenuous outdoor activity during the warmest parts of the day. Public facilities such as libraries, community centers, and beaches (with proper shade and sun protection) can serve as informal cooling spots.
Los Angeles County Public Health and the National Weather Service have issued guidance on preventing heat-related illnesses.
Key recommendations include drinking plenty of water before feeling thirsty, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, wearing lightweight and light-colored clothing, and never leaving children or pets in vehicles.
For those without home air conditioning, county cooling centers will be activated if needed, with locations and hours available through Ready LA County or by dialing 211.
