SAN DIEGO - A 17-year-old boy was rescued and hospitalized Saturday after a cliff jump at Sunset Cliffs went wrong when he struck a protruding rock shelf on the way down, according to authorities and video of the incident.
The unidentified teen sprinted toward the edge of the rocky bluffs near Sunset Cliffs Boulevard in the Point Loma area and leaped into the Pacific Ocean. He failed to clear a lower rock ledge, slamming into it with his back and backside before tumbling into the water. A loud impact can be heard in videos circulating on social media.
At least six bystanders jumped into the ocean to help the teen. Video footage shows him conscious afterward, sitting on a cliff ledge surrounded by people as San Diego Fire-Rescue lifeguards and firefighters arrived. Rescuers pulled him from the water around 4:30 p.m. and transported him to a hospital. The extent of his injuries has not been publicly released, though some reports describe them as serious.

San Diego Municipal Code prohibits jumping or diving into the Pacific Ocean or Mission Bay from any natural or man-made point more than five feet above the water. "As a reminder, cliff jumping is not only extremely dangerous but also against the law in San Diego," San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesperson Candace Hadley said.
Sunset Cliffs has long drawn thrill-seekers despite warning signs and the known risks from the area's unstable, eroding bluffs, variable water depths, and hidden rocks. Past incidents at the same location have included serious injuries and at least one fatality in 2019. No further public updates on the teen's condition were available as of Monday.
