Whoops, the Bums Lit It Again: Another Warehouse Structure Fire on the Same Block of Hope Street, Caused by Homeless Drug Addicts
Los Angeles, Oct. 13, 2026 - A suspected arson fire broke out on South Hope Street in Downtown Los Angeles early Tuesday, prompting a large response from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), according to a report posted by local resident @Stellaaa on X.com.
@Stellaaa first noted smelling smoke and hearing numerous sirens around 3:05 a.m., then followed up minutes later with video of the scene, describing a "massive LAFD response" to what she characterized as another suspected arson fire on the block. The footage shows multiple fire engines and ladder trucks with lights flashing, extended aerial ladders, firefighters in turnout gear, hoses deployed along the street, and smoke rising near graffiti-covered commercial buildings in the area.
This incident fits a well-documented pattern of repeated structure fires at vacant commercial buildings on the 1200 block of South Hope Street. Local reports and LAFD records indicate multiple blazes at addresses including 1224 and 1225 S. Hope Street since at least May 2026, when a major fire at an office supplies store required more than 120 firefighters and injured one. Subsequent fires struck the same stretch in June, July, and later months. Community groups have described a cycle involving trespassers in boarded-up or previously damaged properties; several buildings on the block were later declared public nuisances by city officials after resident petitions and neighborhood association advocacy.
Official LAFD alerts from the night of Oct. 12 referenced a structure fire at 1235 S. Hope Street involving a vacant two-story row of commercial buildings, with fire showing on the first floor. Crews achieved a knockdown in about 24 minutes; one civilian was assessed for smoke inhalation, and the cause was listed as undetermined. No firefighter injuries were reported in that incident.
The area has drawn ongoing attention from residents, the Downtown LA Residents Association, and local media for the frequency of fires linked to unsecured vacant structures. @Stellaaa has previously highlighted the pattern, referring to it as the "Hope St Curse." The cause of the latest incident remains under investigation by LAFD.
