  • OUT OF THE FURNACE

    debbie lynn elias|Dec 2, 2013

In his sophomore outing with OUT OF THE FURNACE, writer/director Scott Cooper proves that he is no "flash in the directorial pan." Facing the daunting task of at least equaling, if not surpassing, the excellence of his award winning debut feature "Crazy Heart", Cooper pulls no punches, delivering a prosaically melancholy tale of hearth, home and the ties that bind. Set in the Rust Belt region of the United States outside Pittsburgh in Braddock, Pennsylvania, Cooper again embraces the...

  • French Bulldog with a Time Bomb

    Alyssa Ganezer|Dec 2, 2013

These diminutive dogs have the face of a mischievous alien bat from the planet Cute Overload. They're popular and they're adorable. They're also expensive. A purebred French bulldog from a reputable breeder will cost $2,000 and up. But a "Frenchie" born with a health defect is nothing but a liability to a breeder. Not only is the dog impossible to sell, but also the defect reflects poorly on the breeder's reputation. Such dogs are sent to shelters or even euthanized. Unless the breeder happens...

  • Zero Waste in Santa Monica?

    Claire Goldberg|Dec 2, 2013

Santa Monica decided last March to push forward the environmental goal of making the city zero waste. The issue went to the City Council last March and it was decided that the city would try to become 95% waste-free by 2013. In 2009, the city found that that city diverted 74% of its waste from landfills, which is already higher than the Federal Waste Diversion requirement of 50% by 2015 according to the EPA website. “Zero waste is a change of perspective,” a City Council Report on the issue from Director of Public Works Martin Pastucha sai...

  • Online Trespass Arrest Authorization

    Dec 2, 2013

When a resident or business owner requests the Police Department to arrest a trespasser, it is necessary for the requesting party to perform a private-person arrest. A private-person’s arrest, in part, involves telling a Police Officer that they have authorization to place the trespasser under arrest, and then make that same request in writing, typically by signing a document. Police officers cannot arrest a trespasser without the written approval of the property owner or agent. This can sometimes be problematic for abandoned buildings, or b...

Southern California Edison said the cause of the outage was not immediately known and that crews were responding to the city. $45,000 worth of repairs for Santa Monica’s street lights were approved by City Council Tuesday. With the price of copper up to more than $3 a pound, the street lights’ internal wiring had become the target of a wave of thefts that began in September. No “significant arrests” have been made in the ongoing investigation, according to police officials. Street lights had gone out in the 800 block of Yale, which police later confirmed was the result of stolen wires. There have been more thefts, though police did not disclose the exact locatio...

  • New USC Coach Must Recruit Remaining Players

    Mitch Chortkoff|Dec 2, 2013

There hasn't been a lot written about this, but I've been told there are an unusually high number of USC undergraduate football players eligible for the NFL draft. The number I've heard is 33. That's a lot. Some aren't likely to be high NFL draft choices but they provide depth at USC and they would be missed. Some have redshirted and that year counts toward NFL eligibility. If a player has been in the program for three years, even if one year he redshirted and didn't play, he's NFL eligible....

  • Neuheisel Gave UCLA Hundley

    Steve Finley|Dec 2, 2013

Former UCLA head football coach Rick Neuheisel was probably one of the most satisfied people in America after UCLA beat USC 35-17 Saturday night. Neuheisel recruited Brett Hundley three or four years ago to play for UCLA. Hundley was supposed to be the player who was going to put UCLA football back in the national spotlight. Against USC he showed why he was so highly recruited out of Chandler High School in Arizona. His performance against USC will go down as one of the best games played by a...
