Mississsippi State Sen. Charged with Aggravated Assaulting Gardener with Shovel

Chris Massey is Chairman of the State's Senate's Ethics committee

The Olive Branch police chief said Mississippi state Sen. Chris Massey has been arrested and charged with aggravated assault after a fight in a subdivision.

Chief Don Gammage told The Associated Press that Massey, who's a homebuilder, is accused of hurting another person with a shovel.

Gammage said police responded to a call about the fight in the suburb of Memphis, Tennessee, just before 11 a.m. Thursday and arrested Massey, the senator's father and two other men.

A judge set a $10,000 bond for the 44-year-old Massey and the chief said it was too soon to know whether Massey is represented by an attorney.

A call to Massey's cellphone was not immediately answered. The Republican from Nesbit has been a senator since 2012.
