Ferrer Is Unable to Justify Vaccine Mandates at Media Briefing - Almost 2/3 New Cases This Week Among the Vaccinated

Vaccines have been less than 10% effective in preventing infection, countywide

February 3, 2022 - When asked if there was a public health justification for vaccine mandates, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of Public Health, did not even try to answer the question.

"The vaccines work," she said. "They provide the most protection we can get."

This is not a reason to impose mandates, even if what she meant was that vaccines work to protect against death. The only justification for a vaccine mandate is if it reduces infection. They do not, as data from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health shows.

Since June 1, 2021, 44% of new cases were among the vaccinated, who only comprised an average of 53.7% of the population. Therefore, vaccines only provided an average 9.7% benefit regarding infection. Hardly sufficient a difference to trample civil rights and create social division.

It gets worse. During the past week, 63.5% of new cases were among the vaccinated, who now comprise 70.6% of the population. The benefit from the vaccine was only 7.1%.

To claim that vaccine mandates will halt or even significantly slow transmission is to ignore the data collected by the health department she heads.

But according to Ferrer, "Anything we can do to get to a lower level of transmission is appropriate still."

In that case, vaccine mandates are no longer appropriate. They are not lowering transmission. And it is no surprise she was unable to justify them.

Nobody cares about the infection rates of the common cold because it doesn't cause serious illness or death. The most important metric of a vaccine is not whether it prevents infection, but whether it prevents serious illness or death...The CDC notes that even the smallpox vaccine is only 95% effective...In another article you note how deaths from Omicron are 90% less than for Delta, for a similar number of infections, yet you fail to realize that this in part due to the vaccine. Why are you unable or unwilling to make the connection?
