Pelosi will touch down in Taipei Tuesday night and is going to spend the night at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, local media said
Becoming the first US Speaker of the House to visit Taiwan since Newt Gingrich in 1997, Nancy Pelosi visited the rogue Chinese island nation Tuesday evening local time. She was met by cheers of citizens and actually, very little in the way of military activity from the Mainland Chinese. In video, Taiwan's children chased after the Speaker's car in excitement.
A loudmouth Chinese broadcaster connected with the Chinese Communist Party had suggested that the PLA shoot down Pelosi's official plane. That did not happen and in any case, was never official CCP policy.
"Nancy Pelosi’s #Taiwan Itinerary Confirmed by Local Media. Pelosi will touch down in Taipei Tuesday night and is going to spend the night at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, local media said. Pelosi will then visit Taiwan’s parliament Wednesday morning where she will meet Tsai Ing-Wen," tweeted the Modern China News Agency.
The Chinese did say they would conduct live fire exercises in the sea around Taiwan. The PLA released a map with six areas of life fire exercises delineated. It seemed likely this would not happen before Thursday, after the Speaker departs Taiwan.
at 10:20 am PST: Taiwan’s Presidential Office just confirmed that at around 17:15 local time, the Presidential Office’s website was hit by an overseas DDoS attack. The attack traffic was 200 times that of a normal day, causing the official website to be down for 20 minutes.
