Catalina Museum for Art & History Announces New Spring and Summer Programs, including Taller Tiki Tales

April, May, June and July Events

Inspire the next generation of museum visitors and bring the whole family together for Catalina Museum for Art & History's Family Free Day on Sunday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors can enjoy the museum's collection and special exhibitions in addition to a family art project offered in the Hinchliffe Family Atrium from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Up to two adults may each claim a free ticket when accompanied by a visitor age 17 or younger. Four Family Free Days are offered annually; each adult free ticket must be used on the event day.

May First Fridays at the Museum will be on Friday, May 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. to celebrate Cinco de Mayo! Families and friends of all ages are invited to experience a free community celebration. Enjoy an art project for the kids, local food vendors, cultural performances including live music by local band Sin Frontera, a performance by Ballet Folklorico Quetzal and more!

Visit the museum during extended hours on Friday, May 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. for Culture between Cocktails! During these extended hours, guests can view the film in the digital theater, stroll through the galleries, mingle with fellow members and guests, and enjoy a refreshing cocktail in the open-air plazas on the museum's second level.

Join the Catalina Museum for Art & History for one of the most authentic 1920s cinematic experiences at the 36th Annual Avalon Silent Film Showcase on Saturday, May 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. This year, we are excited to present a double feature: The White Shadow (1923) and Upstream (1927) with live musical accompaniment by Michael Mortilla (Composer/Piano) and Nicole Garcia (Violin/Percussion). Stand-up comedian, actor and magician Ron Lynch will emcee the evening.

Sven Kirsten comes back to the island for the June edition of First Fridays at the Museum: Taller Tiki Tales on Friday, June 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. With his customary boatload of eye-candy imagery, Sven will go into detail about some key exhibit pieces expanding their meaning with additional materials and information that could not be included in the various sections of the exhibition. More Polynesia Americana mysteries will be revealed, and no questions will be left unanswered!

On Saturday, June 3rd, join a special "Three Hour Tour" to the Isthmus with Sven Kirsten, guest curator of the Tall Tiki Tales: Catalina as a South Seas Island exhibition. Sven will guide a group of intrepid explorers on a boat trip from Avalon to what is now known as Two Harbors to discover the relics of Christian's Hut and other South Sea movie locations at the Catalina Isthmus. A respite of lunch and cocktails on the beach next to the Harbor Reef restaurant will strengthen the expedition members for the cruise back to Avalon.

Join on Friday, July 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. for First Fridays at the Museum: Paint and Sip evening with Dylan Stewart from Inspire Arts Education. Explore the museum galleries to get inspired before heading up to our Schreiner Family Plaza for a beverage and to pick your seat. At 7:00 pm, Stewart will begin the guided painting portion of the evening. He will guide you step-by-step as you paint a Catalina and Tiki-inspired masterpiece.
