Moorpark College Computer Science Professor Arrested, Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter in Death of Pro-Israel Protestor Paul Kessler, 69

Loay Abdelfattah Alnaji, 50, faces up to 4 years in prison if convicted of Involuntary Manslaughter, a kind of “criminal negligence."

A Moorpark professor has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for the killing of a Jewish man Paul Kessler at a protest in Thousand Oaks on November 6th.

Loay Abdelfattah Alnaji, 50, has been arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter for the murder of Paul Kessler, 69, who was waving an Israeli flag across Westlake Blvd from a pro-Hamas rally. Alnaji was taken into custody Thursday 11.16.23, by The Ventura County Sheriff's Office.

Witness accounts differ, with some saying Alnaji hit Kessler over the head with a megaphone. Others say he merely shoved Kessler, who fell over and hit his head on the sidewalk. Kessler, a member of Chabad, died while being transported to a hospital.

Alnaji was among those who called 911 to report a man down on the sidewalk, then stayed with him until an ambulance and police arrived. Kessler had crossed the street to confront pro-Hamas protestors during competing demonstrations.

The victim was evacuated to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The Ventura County Sheriff has confirmed Kessler's death. The confrontation occurred in Westlake Village, a suburb of Los Angeles, on Monday afternoon at about 5 pm PST.

Loay Alnaji, a Moorpark College professor who at one point was the faculty advisor for the campus Muslim Student Association. His son was one of the officers in 2019.

Involuntary Manslaughter in California is the least serious form of murder. It is defined as unlawfully causing the death of another person by acting with criminal negligence. A conviction is punishable by up to 4 years in jail or prison and a fine of up to $10,000.00.

Alnaji's name was never released during the investigation and appears to have been protected by police. The US has seen a wave of protests, mostly in support of Hamas, after the terror organization murdered 1200 Israelis of all religions.

The brutal murders included women and children and often included burning the victims alive.

Moorpark College is a public community college in Ventura County. Moorpark College enrolled 14,254 students in 2014.
