Update 5/13/2024: We were contacted by the deceased's family, who asked us to correct the article and add that the deceased woman was not, in fact, homeless.
5.6.24: The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner and Santa Monica Police were seen loading a deceased homeless woman into the Examiner's van on Monday afternoon, just after the US Post Office closed at 5 pm on May 6th.
A Santa Monica Police officer guarded her body in front of the US Post Office on 7th Street just North of Olympic. This postal facility is the central collection and distribution facility for the post office for LA's entire Westside.
The unidentified woman was wearing sandals, a T-shirt and cutoff Levi's jeans. Her body was found in front of the main post office in Downtown Santa Monica, on the corner of 7th Street and Olympic Blvd. She appeared to have died several hours before medical examiners were called to the scene. She appeared to have been about 50 years old at time of death.
Update: 5/8/24 "The decedent is an approximately 50-year-old female who appears to have passed from natural causes. She is still a Jane Doe. The coroner will determine the cause of death, identify her, and notify any relations." Lt. Erika Aklufi, Public Information Officer, SMPD.
