Saudi Arabia's Ras Tanura Oil Refinery Forced to Close After Iranian Drone Strike on Monday March 2, 2026

Iran's drone strike on world's largest oil refinery, causes the price of oil to spike and equity markets to fall.

Saudi Aramco, the state-owned oil company, halted operations at the Ras Tanura facility as a precautionary measure following the incident, according to multiple reports from Reuters, Bloomberg, and other sources. The refinery, one of the world's largest and oldest, has a processing capacity of over 500,000 barrels of crude oil per day and plays a key role in global oil exports.

Initial accounts indicate that the strike caused a small, isolated fire at the site, which was brought under control by firefighters. Video footage shared on social media and referenced in news reports shows plumes of black smoke rising from the area, though no casualties have been reported so far.

Several outlets, including India TV News and others citing social media and regional sources, have attributed the attack to an Iranian drone, with some specifying a Shahed-136 model. The incident occurs amid heightened tensions following recent U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iranian targets, which have prompted Iranian retaliatory strikes on Israel, U.S. assets in the region, and now apparently extending to Saudi infrastructure.

Market reaction was swift: Brent crude futures rose approximately 9% in early trading, reaching around $79 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate climbed about 8-9% to near $72 per barrel. Analysts attribute the surge to concerns over potential disruptions to global oil supply from the world's largest exporter, though the shutdown is described as precautionary and the fire contained.

This event marks a notable expansion of the ongoing conflict, raising questions about the security of critical energy infrastructure in the Gulf. Saudi authorities have not yet issued a detailed official statement on the cause or extent of damage, and assessments remain preliminary as the situation develops.
