Man Fatally Shot in Apparent Road Rage Incident Near 4th and Olympic in Santa Monica

Social media alerts, including from the Citizen app, reported that 4-5 men may have fled the scene Saturday Night

Santa Monica, CA — A man was killed in a shooting late Saturday night near the intersection of 4th Street and Olympic Drive in what authorities describe as an altercation between occupants of two vehicles.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD), officers responded to a report of a shooting at approximately 10:30 p.m. on March 28, 2026. Upon arrival, they located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers rendered aid until Santa Monica Fire Department paramedics took over. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Preliminary information indicates the incident stemmed from a confrontation between the occupants of two vehicles. During the altercation, a suspect produced a firearm and discharged at least one round, striking the victim. The suspect or suspects fled the scene before officers arrived. SMPD has described the incident as isolated, with no ongoing threat to the community.

The victim’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin and confirmation by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office. No suspect description or vehicle details have been released. The intersection, located near SMPD headquarters, City Hall, and the on-ramp to the 10 Freeway, was closed for several hours overnight and reopened around 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

The child’s mother, Carmen Anita Degregg, faces murder and child assault charges.

On February 7, two 54-year-olds were found dead in a suspected murder-suicide on Ocean Avenue (counted as one homicide under standard statistics).

For comparison, Santa Monica recorded four murders in all of 2025, part of an overall decline in serious crime that year.No arrests have been announced in the 4th and Olympic case, and no additional details on the victim or suspect have been released as of March 30, 2026.This story is developing.
